The Mustang has been around for over 50 years and has a storied history. Those early models earned the musclecar title but today’s versions make them seem quaint.
With modern technology, today’s Mustangs are more powerful, safer, and more comfortable to drive. Better in every way, really.
Let’s look at the lineup of Ford Mustang Trims for 2019.
Ford Mustang Trims for 2019
For the 2019 model year, Ford offers seven Mustang trim levels:
- EcoBoost
- EcoBoost Premium
- GT
- GT Premium
- Bullitt
- Shelby GT350
- Shelby GT350R
While there are some big differences between the trim levels, they’re all built with the Mustang’s legend in mind. And they not only turn heads, but also win awards like JD Power’s highest ranked midsize sporty car award for 2018.
Let’s look at the different trim levels and what makes each of them special.
Trim 1: EcoBoost
The EcoBoost is the entry-level model in the Mustang stable. The EcoBoost is powered by a 2.3 liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine turning out 310 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque.
If you look back on the early years of the Mustang, you would have had to look at one of the top models to get that kind of power. With the EcoBoost, the Mustang sets a high bar for “entry-level.”
The EcoBoost is available with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 10-speed automatic transmission. Manual transmissions are quickly becoming an endangered species but if you love to row your own gears, Mustang has you covered.
The EcoBoost also includes a limited-slip rear differential and has an available performance package that adds stickier performance tires, a bigger radiator, and stiffer front springs. It’s available in both hardtop coupe and convertible body styles.
Trim 2: EcoBoost Premium
The EcoBoost Premium includes all the same features as the EcoBoost but adds some creature comforts to make your ride even more enjoyable.
The Premium trim includes leather seats that are both heated and cooled, so you’ll be comfortable any time of the year. It also includes Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto built in. Sync 3 also offers a built-in WiFi hotspot so everyone in the car can be online.
You get premium aluminum foot pedals and a digital gauge cluster is optional on the EcoBoost Premium. The digital cluster lets you customize the layout to suit your taste. Designed by graphics engineers with video game backgrounds, it’s easy to use, easy to see, and super functional.
Trim 3: GT
The Mustang GT name is legendary and the 2019 model carries on that legacy. It has a 5.0-liter powerplant under the hood producing 460 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque. Like the EcoBoost, you have the choice of a 6-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic transmission. In the GT, the manual gearbox adds a rev-matching feature as well.
The GT trim includes power seats but no heating or cooling, and cloth only. The GT is available in a hardtop coupe body style only.
Trim 4: GT Premium
Next in line is the GT Premium trim. This trim level includes the same engine as the GT but like the EcoBoost Premium, it adds some more creature comforts.
The GT Premium includes power-adjustable leather seats with heating and cooling as well as an optional dual-zone climate control. It has Ford’s Sync 3 system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a built-in WiFi hotspot.
The Ford Safe & Smart package is optional on the GT Premium. This package includes an adaptive cruise control system with collision warning, a lane-keeping system, and a blind-spot information system to help keep you safe on the road.
The digital gauge cluster is once again optional on the Premium version of the GT and you can also get a Bang & Olufsen premium sound system that’s new to the Mustang line-up in 2019.
The GT Premium has an optional California Special appearance package as well.
The California Special holds a special place in the hearts of Mustang fans. The original California Special, or GT/CS as it’s affectionately known, was a special edition of the 1968 Mustang. Ford had built some prototypes of a new Shelby Mustang in 1967 that never made it to market. Many of those parts found their way into the California Special in 1968, making it one of the more unique trims that year.
The 2019 California Special puts a modern spin on the GT/CS, with unique wheels, special badging, and specially-trimmed seats and floor mats.
Trim 5: Bullitt
1968 was a special year for the Mustang. That was the year one of film’s most iconic car chases hit theaters in the movie Bullitt. Steve McQueen starred as San Franciso Police Lieutenant Frank Bullitt but his dark-green ’68 Mustang fastback should have got top-billing.
The 2019 Bullitt pays homage to its 1968 predecessor while offering some of the latest technology you’ll find in a Mustang. It’s painted dark green to match the original (with Shadow Black as an optional body color) and has the solid black Bullitt wheels styled after the movie’s original.
The Bullitt trim has the same 5.0-liter V8 found in the GT models but adds open-air induction and a high-performance intake manifold. These upgrades add another 20 horsepower to the already-impressive output, giving you 480 horses under the hood.
The digital gauge cluster is standard on the Bullitt Mustang and it includes an old-school cue-ball shifter and black leather seats with green stitching. The Bullitt model is only available in a hardtop, just like the original.
Trim 6 & 7: Shelby GT350 and GT350R
The Shelby GT350 was the original performance Mustang, all the way back in 1965. The 2019 version lives up to the name, and then some.
The GT350 features a 5.2-liter V8 pounding out 526 horsepower and 429 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s the most powerful naturally-aspirated production engine in Ford history as well as the highest-revving, with a redline of 8,250 RPM.
The GT350 features the MagneRide Damping System that monitors and adjusts itself 1,000 times every second to meet the demands of any road. The Integrated Driver Control (IDC) system lets you customize various preferences to adjust the car’s handling dynamics to suit your taste.
Inside, the GT350 has Recaro seats, a race-inspired Shelby shift knob, a shift indicator light on the windshield so you don’t have to take your eyes off the road. Every GT350 has a unique chassis number that’s displayed on a badge on the dash.
The GT350R trim includes all the performance features from the GT350 but adds 19-inch carbon fiber wheels and a carbon fiber rear wing. And like the original GT350R back in the ’60s, there’s no rear seat to get it down to racing weight.
